Position Overview

The Lead Greenhouse Grower is responsible for independently operating and overseeing all greenhouse production systems on our diversified fruit and vegetable farm. This includes propagation for farm use, plants for sale, and microgreen production.

The role requires strong technical skill, daily self-management, and close collaboration with the farm owners and management team. While this is primarily an independent position, the Lead Grower may occasionally coordinate or assist small work crews for larger projects.

Key Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of greenhouse production experience on a diversified farm.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in:

    • Annual plant propagation

    • Microgreen production

    • Pest and disease identification and management

    • Greenhouse systems operation (heating, irrigation, ventilation)

  • Basic carpentry, mechanical, and maintenance skills.

  • Moderate skill operating a skid steer or similar equipment.

  • Comfortable using digital tools (spreadsheets, shared documents, phone apps) for scheduling, recordkeeping, and inventory.

  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

  • Ability to read and write in English (Spanish proficiency a plus).

  • Self-driven, dependable, and motivated by high standards of quality and community service.

Licensing and Driving Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license with a clean driving record (no moving violations within the past three years).

  • Qualified to drive pickup trucks, sprinter vans, and box trucks (under 26,000 GWR).

Physical and Environmental Requirements

To successfully perform this job, the individual must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs to a height of 3–4 feet and load onto shelves, benches, or vehicles.

  • Stand and/or walk for long periods (up to 100% of the workday).

  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch.

  • Use hands, arms, and fingers to handle plants, tools, and equipment.

  • Occasionally climb ladders or steps and maintain balance.

  • Operate vehicles for deliveries or errands in varied traffic and weather conditions (rain, fog, snow, heat, cold).

  • Work outdoors and in unheated structures year-round, in all weather conditions.

  • Safely work around and handle soil, water, compost, organic fertilizers, seeds, and agricultural materials used in organic and sustainable practices.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Additional coursework or training in horticulture, agronomy, or greenhouse management preferred.

Schedule

  • Flexible schedule required; start times may be as early as 5:30 a.m. during peak season.

  • Workload and hours vary seasonally (heavier in spring/summer, lighter in winter).

Job Type: Full-Time, Hourly (Average 35–50 hours/week; busier in summer, lighter in winter)

Core Responsibilities

Greenhouse Operations & Production

  • Manage all greenhouse enterprises, including:

    1. Transplant production for internal field use

    2. Transplant production for spring plant sale

    3. Microgreen, edible flower, and mini leaf lettuce production for wholesale and retail outlets

  • Implement all aspects of crop production, including seeding, watering, soil preparation, fertility management, hardening off, pest and disease control, and record keeping.

  • Follow crop plans to meet weekly propagation schedules; maintain seed and supply inventories.

  • Conduct weekly planning to develop upcoming worklists and daily task sheets.

  • Maintain greenhouse structures, irrigation systems, ventilation, and environmental controls; diagnose and resolve basic structural or mechanical issues.

  • Scout regularly for pests and disease; implement preventative and responsive management strategies consistent with sustainable and organic practices.

  • Prepare, harvest, and package microgreens and greenhouse products to meet customer quality standards.


    Coordination & Communication

  • Work directly with owners/managers to fulfill production goals, harvest schedules, and order needs.

  • Occasionally lead or assist small work crews for greenhouse-related projects.

  • Communicate clearly and cooperatively with coworkers, maintaining a professional and positive demeanor.

  • Maintain accurate written and digital records of plantings, pest management, harvests, and seed inventories.

Maintenance & General Farm Support

  • Conduct light carpentry, tool, and equipment maintenance as needed.

  • Participate in seasonal farm upkeep, such as mowing, weed whacking, and organizing tools and materials.

  • Support other farm areas (field production, wash/pack, farmers markets, or deliveries) as needed.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in all farm facilities.

  • Adhere to farm food safety and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) standards at all times.

    Job Overview:

    This position is perfect for a person who loves connecting and communicating with other people, is excited by seasonal eating, has strong organizational skills and has personal style and flair.

    The Farm Market Lead position is a full-time position. The lead position will be responsible for the everyday setup and break down of the store. Duties will include assisting customers with check out, merchandising produce and other food products, restocking, unitizing products, packing orders, providing information about products to customers, and assisting marketing manager with social media work.

    Communication skills will be essential for this role. An ideal candidate will be outgoing and friendly towards all customers and possess a high level of knowledge about produce, local goods and artisanal foods. A high level of design and display aesthetics is also important for this role. The ideal candidate will want to work outdoors in an up-tempo, professional work environment. Owners and Management place a high-value on punctuality and follow through.

    Key Job Duties & Responsibilities:

    Operate POS system; coordinate and implement POS updates in conjunction with sales and marketing manager.

    Communicate clearly, effectively and succinctly with all customers.

    Place orders with / update other crew members RE inventory and needs.

    Set up produce and other market displays on a daily basis with style.

    Break down, care for and put away perishable products.

    Clean and maintain the store.

    Harvest, wash, and pack produce.

    Inspect produce and bring quality issues to the attention of the manager.

    Follow all GAPs and/or food safety procedures.

    Verify that orders/items are packed correctly.

    Follow all written and verbal instructions as issued by business owners and managers.

    Perform all delivery duties to restaurants and wholesale customers without issue.

    Perform all duties related to farmers market sales including, prep, driving, market set up, merchandising, sales and arithmetic for making change.

    Key Requirements:

    Work outdoors in all seasons, weather and temperatures.

    Be 21 or older in order to legally sell beer and wine.

    Have legal work status.

    Ability to provide own transportation to and from work

    Valid NC drivers license and insurance, clear driving record for at least 3 years.

    Flexible schedule.
